Léon The Professional (1994)
Mathilda: Is life always this hard, or is it just when you're a kid? Leon: Always.
Following the killing of her family, Mathilda Lando (Natalie Portman) seeks refuge in her neighbour's home. She then learns of Léon's profession of being a hitman. In exchange for a place to stay, Mathilda strikes a deal with him and in the process falls in love. Throughout the film, though initially not wanting Mathilda to live with him and disrupt his daily routine, Léon caves in and starts to care for the young girl. The pair engage in Léon's job together and after Mathilda learns the ins and outs of being a hitman, she tries to take matters into her hands by hunting down her family's killer.
Luc Besson's Léon The Professional tells the tale of one's journey in learning to let loose and enjoy life without constraining one's self too much. The journey of Léon as he learns to get out of his shell and live his life more fully through the eyes of Mathilda shows us that it is possible to get better with time. Natalie Portman and Jean Reno's fantastic portrayal of their characters sets you in their situation, and move you to tears.
