The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)

“I think we're just gonna to have to be secretly in love with each other and leave it at that.”

No, this is not another cliché love story.

Wes Anderson's The Royal Tenenbaums centres around the main themes of family, love and forgiveness. The movie follows the lives of Royal Tenenbaum, the once estranged father of the household who lies and deceives his family in order to have a place to live in; Etheline, after separating from Royal, tries to find love again; Margot, adopted at age two and highly secretive about her life; Richie, a once thriving and excelling tennis player who falls in love with his sister; and Chas, a child prodigy in finance who sued his father twice and is overly protective of his children after his wife’s death.

After 17 years, the family find themselves together again in their old family house. Through their stories, we learn of acceptance of one’s mistakes, learning to forgive and knowing when to move on. The chaos of the family will leave a mark on you, whether through the visual lens or through their meaningful dialogues. After all it is just a story about everyone trying to understand each other and fix their mistakes.
