50 First Dates (2004)

“Can I have one last first kiss?” - Lucy

How do you fall in love with a stranger in just a day? And the more, how do you do that everyday?

Well, that’s a question the film “50 First Dates” managed to show us. The film follows the unusual and quirky love story of Henry Roth and Lucy Whitmore. And as the film begins, you’d think that, “Oh it’s the typical playboy meets innocent girl and they eventually complement each other, fall in love and that’s that” but while that is somehow the case, what I love about this film is how they gave a twist to the typical RomCom formula.

Unlike the other RomComs I’ve watched, this is one of my few favorites (and I am not the biggest fan of cheesy chick flicks) because the concept of Lucy having a short-term memory loss and completely forgetting everything she does and everyone she meets after the day of her accident and Henry trying to make her fall for him every single day just as though it’s their first encounter is something I cannot completely fathom despite watching this more than five times now.

It’s really the story of this movie that got me hooked and I guess that’s why it’s also a cult classic by now. The idea of “a relationship where you fall for each other everyday” is literally the case in this movie and for me, it’s definitely worth the watch and the kilig.
